The House of Magic

The House of Magic

"Located opposite the Château de Blois in a large bourgeois house from 1856, the Maison de la Magie is an essential stopover when visiting Blois . Inaugurated on June 1 , 1998, it is the only public museum in Europe to present in the same place for magic collections and a permanent live show, different every year .

When you arrive, be surprised by the six-headed dragon that appears at the windows every half hour. Inside, on more than 2,000 m² spread over five levels , immerse yourself in the world of magic. Room after room , discover the history of magic, the life and work of Robert Houdin as well as new exhibitions and optical illusions of all kinds. At the crossroads between discovery of the city's historical and magical heritage and family entertainment, this temple of magical arts opens its doors to you for a visit full of surprises.

The House of Magic is the culmination of a long project intended to promote the magical and scientific heritage left by Robert Houdin . In the 1960s, Paul Robert Houdin, grandson of the magician, opened a private museum in Blois. The presentation is essentially biographical and shows some personal objects bequeathed to the family. In 1981, this collection was donated to the City of Blois and enriched by the purchase of a mysterious clock and an automaton. Then it was presented at the Royal Castle of Blois from 1985 to 1991.

From 1986 to 1989, the magical arts festival, created by Gérard Majax in Blois, enjoyed great public success. The City decides to support the creation of a municipal museum desired by the magicians. In 1990, the City of Blois purchased Maison Massé, a large bourgeois house from 1856, located opposite the Royal Castle, as well as part of Georges Proust's collection of magic objects. Thanks to the support of the CNAMI, in particular from Christian Fechner its president in 1998, these magic objects and posters from the 19th and 20th centuries are finally presented to the public in the new museum. “Museum of France” since 2003, this structure of the City of Blois receives technical and financial support from the State."
